The FUTEK Team is made up of a highly motivated group of individuals
. Because our team designs and manufactures the sensors we sell we take a unique interest in how these sensors are used in the market. Hungry for new applications, we decided, what better way to obtain application details than from our customers! With that being said, we held a contest for over the course of 3 months and were highly pleased with the results. During March
of this year, FUTEK announced the start of an application contest where applicants were asked to submit us their applications online. The first place winner was to receive a grand prize of a mini laptop along with a FUTEK LSB200 S-Beam Jr. Sensor + extended software.
With no limits as to what kinds of applications applicants could submit, whether it was actual or hypothetical, submissions were received from all over the world. Some of the top, most interesting and unique applications came from local neighboring cities, states across the country and as far as countries such as Netherlands, India, and Australia. From the entrepreneurial engineering firm to the global conglomerate, we found our products were utilized in fascinating applications. FUTEK’s sensors can be seen in health and fitness, neuropathological applications, communications systems, and petrochemical testing to name a few. It’s no secret that FUTEK has been manufacturing products to serve in a variety of industries, but this contest further went to prove this. This month’s newsletter will focus on some of the most innovative and highly creative applications submitted as well as feature and congratulate our First and Second prize winners.
No. 1 Application – Barge Measurement System
Submitted By – Marcela R. G. da Trindade of Laboratório de Tecnologia Oceânica da COPPE.
Winning Prize – FUTEK LSB200 Load Cell with USB output, A Netbook laptop equipped with our Extended USB Software
Multi-Component Bi-Axial Load Cells can be used for numerous applications due to their ability to measure in multiple axis. A particular application where FUTEK’s MBA400 was used was in measuring the load in a barge measuring system. This company uses sensors to test ocean structures and equipments which are used in the exploration and production of oil and gas offshore ...Application Notes
No. 2 Application – Bite Force Application for Dementia Study
Submitted By – Vrije University (Netherlands)
Winning Prize – FUTEK LSB200 Load Cell with USB output and extended Software
Researchers used the LLB250 to measure the bite force of senior citizens in a research project for dementia. A stainless steel probe was used for the front teeth. The LLB250 was placed in the probe to measure the force of the bite and could also be placed in other probes in order to measure the force of molar teeth of the subject. The LLB250 250lb. version was chosen due to its compact size and height making it a perfect candidate for this application ...
No. 3 Application – Break Torque / Peak Torque Application
Submitted By – Johnson Health Tech NA
FUTEK’s TFF Flange to Flange Torque Sensor Series utilize metal foil strain gauge technology, achieving optimum accuracy. Measurements can be made in clockwise and counter clockwise direction. In the following application a FUTEK TFF sensor is being used to detect the breaking torque of the generator seen ...
No. 4 Application – Mass Flow Meter
Submitted By – Eastern Instruments
FUTEK’s side mount load cells are particularly geared for OEM applications in both tension and compression. The LSM300 Precision Load Cell which is also known as the Belt Buckle Load Cell was used in the application illustrated to measure the mass flow of solid particles in a process line. The sensor was attached to a counterbalance assembly and the force sensing point is then connected to the structure of the flow meter to give the output ...
No. 5 Application – Actuator Multi Axis Load Cell Application
Submitted By – Eastern Instruments
FUTEK’s MTA400 is a multi axis sensor that offers an excellent solution for measuring Fx (250 lbs), Fy (250 lbs), and Fz (500 lbs) loads. In this particular application FUTEK’s MTA400 multi axis sensor is being used in to measure forces in both the x and y axis. Attached to a fixture on the actuator, the MTA400 slides horizontally and vertical measuring the force in both directions ...

Bob Byrum the founder of Sensor Manufacturing in 1977 in Novi Michigan passed away in June 2010. He was an alliance of FUTEK, a personal mentor and friend of our CEO, Javad Mokhbery. Bob had supported many major players in the sensor industry for over 40 years with high precision machining, engineering guidance, assistances. Bob was an intelligent man with a wonderful sense of humor, a brilliant engineer and incredibly generous. He also gave up his time as generously to anyone he perceived as working hard to achieve their dreams. Whether it was an encouraging word or financial help he stood by his friends. He has certainly gained the love and gratitude of the many individuals whose lives he has touched. He was the beloved husband of Barbara (Bobbie) for over 53 years, devoted father of daughter Lynn and son Robert Lee. He will truly be missed.
