IRVINE, Calif.: FUTEK is excited to announce that the QTA141 Micro Reaction Torque Sensor is a Top 5 finalist in QMEDs 2017 Innovation Prize. All finalist submissions were on display at the MD&M West trade show and conference in Anaheim, CA from February 7-9, 2017.
The QTA141 was designed to provide precision torque feedback to miniature DC gearmotors and drives. Joon Park, Torque Sensor Engineering Lead and Design Engineer for FUTEK stated the following about the development of the product: When one of our customers, a surgical robotics manufacturer, approached us with a challenge of building a torque sensor capable of providing torque feedback to control, operate and limit brushless DC gearmotor drives used in an automated medical system, we were thrilled at the opportunity of leveraging our expertise at miniature sensor design and manufacturing to provide optimal solutions for our customers.
The QTA141 sensor has a 22 mm outer diameter and a large 10 mm inner diameter allowing it to mount seamlessly with 22 mm motors while allowing drive shafts and couplings to pass cleanly through the center of the sensor. Performance was a critical aspect of the QTA141s design goals, according to Joon Park, To outperform any alternative solutions of providing torque feedback. The sensor performs better than 0.5% in linearity error, allowing automated medical system designers to provide solutions that were previously not possible. The innovative flexure design allows for high extraneous load bearing capabilities and high fatigue life. There are no wearable parts and no limitations in RPM, resulting in a highly reliable method of providing torque feedback.
