High Precision Milligram Scale for the Pharmaceutical Industry

To maximize the precision of the sensors’ output, they need to be paired with high-resolution signal conditioners, which are integral to the weighing system’s performance. The signal conditioner or amplifier reads, filters, and conditions the load cell output, ensuring that the data acquisition system receives a clean and high-resolution signal that provides measurements up to the milligrams scale (milligram scale for medication).


FUTEK LRF400 is a low capacity and high precision load cell. When paired with the USB225 high-resolution USB digital signal conditioner, it provides all the load measurement fundamentals to meet the requirements of accurate milligram scales with the following capabilities:

  • Higher resolution: Low capacity load cells (i.e. LRF400) paired with high-resolution instruments (i.e. USB225) enable milligram scales to display weight readings with greater resolution (i.e. noise-free resolution or NFR) and accuracy (i.e. nonlinearity).
  • Enhanced sensitivity: FUTEK’s high-accuracy load cell LRF400 has greater sensitivity in comparison to standard load cells, allowing for the measurement of minimal weight variations. This sensitivity is essential for achieving the high precision measurements that are required in medication applications.
    Improved Linearity: LRF400 exhibits excellent nonlinearity, hysteresis, and nonrepeatability of ±0.05% of rated output, meaning the relationship between the applied load and the electrical output is highly accurate, repeatable, and predictable.
  • Temperature compensation: Medication measurement can be affected by temperature variations. The LRF400 is equipped with advanced temperature compensation, minimizing the influence of temperature changes from 60 to 160°F [15 to 71°C].
  • Robust construction: The LRF400 high-accuracy load cell is constructed to withstand rigorous usage and provide long-term reliability. Though the LRF400 is a miniature force sensor with a height of only 2.27” [58 mm] it is engineered with lightweight (140 grams) aluminum material and safe overload protection up to 200x for the 0.25 lb capacity (pls refer to the spec sheet chart).
    Alternatively, FUTEK’s QLA399 is an OEM custom parallelogram load cell with a high-resolution RS232 output built-in signal conditioner. It is a digital OEM scale with a rated capacity of 300 grams (0.66 lbs). It features a loading plate that is 0.955 inches (24.3 mm) in diameter.

A common application for high-precision load cells is milligram scale for powders (aka mg scale for powder). Given LRF400 resolution, sensitivity and accuracy, it can also be integrated into milligram scale for powders. 

Alternatively, FUTEK’s QLA399 is an OEM custom parallelogram load cell with a high-resolution RS232 output built-in signal conditioner. It is a digital OEM scale with a rated capacity of 300 grams (0.66 lbs). It features a loading plate that is 0.955 inches (24.3 mm) in diameter.

How it Works
  1. LRF400 Load Cell Installation: Install the load cell within the high precision milligram scale, ensuring proper alignment and secure mounting to enable accurate weight measurement for medication dosages. Alternatively, LRF400 can be used standalone along with a threaded load plate. Also, the model QLA399 is an OEM custom parallelogram load cell with high-resolution RS232 output built-in signal conditioner and load plate.

  2. USB225 Installation: Connect the USB digital signal conditioner with the load cell to amplify and condition the sensor's electrical signal. The whole force measurement system needs to be calibrated to ensure that the load cell + cable + amplifier are accurate as a whole system. FUTEK offers an A2LA accredited lab capable of low capacity calibration.
