How to use a In-Line Load Cell as a Cable Tension Meter

Cable-stayed electrical towers and cable-stayed bridges rely on cables to support their weight and withstand external forces like strong winds and others. To ensure their safety and reliability, it's paramount to monitor the tension of stayed-cables constantly. In-line load cells, also known as cable tension sensors, are suitable cable tension measuring devices for measuring cable tension accurately and efficiently.

FUTEK LCM Series In-line load cells also referred to as cable tension sensors or cable tension meters, are mounted in the cable line and measure the axial load applied to the cable as it is transmitted to the load cell sensor. FUTEK LCM Series In-line load cells (aka Steel Wire Rope tension meter) are available in various sizes and load capacities to suit different cable sizes and tension levels.

To use FUTEK's LCM Series Miniature Threaded In Line Load Cells as a cable tension measuring device, you need to mount them coupled with rod end bearings. This assembly provides any cable manufacturer with a high-endurance feedback solution. The load cell should be installed axially with the cable length, away from any bends, splices, or connections that might interfere with the axial load measurement. This ensures that the load cell measures the tension of the cable accurately and consistently. Once the load cell is installed, you can use it as a steel wire rope tension meter by measuring the cable tension by reading the output signal of the load cell using a signal conditioner or amplifier.

How it Works
  1. Utilizing FUTEK's LCM Series Miniature Threaded In Line Load Cell coupled with rod end bearings, provides any cable manufacturer with a high-endurance feedback solution for cable tension measurement.

  2. Due to its compact size, the LCM Series integrates easily into various cable tension applications.

  3. As the operator or manufacturer performs this particular cable tension test, results can then be displayed on various instruments or amplified utilizing an IAA Series Analog Amplifier.

  4. The analog output of the sensor can be taken to either of FUTEK's digital displays - the IHH500 Intelligent Digital Hand Held Display or IPM650 Panel Mount Display - or digitally streamed to FUTEK's USB Solution.

  5. Pairing any of these instruments with FUTEK’s SENSIT™ Test and Measurement Software allows the collection of all the results.

  6. Note: For outdoor use, protection from the elements is required. FUTEK offers optional encapsulation to protect from moisture.
