Behavioral Phenotype Tests in Rats | FUTEK

Behavioral phenotyping systems help researchers better understand neurological function, disease progression, metabolism, and treatment efficacy by monitoring how animals interact within their home-cage environment. These studies generate valuable insights into feeding behavior, drinking activity, movement patterns, and overall animal health without disrupting natural behavior.

Automated behavioral monitoring platforms combine robotics, software, data acquisition, and precision force measurement technology to continuously collect data from laboratory animals. By integrating high-resolution load cells into feeding, drinking, and activity-monitoring modules, researchers can accurately quantify behavioral events while reducing the need for manual observation.

This approach supports a wide range of biomedical research applications, including neuroscience, metabolic disease, obesity studies, drug discovery, and genetic research.

How it Works

  1. Laboratory animals remain within their normal home-cage environment while food intake, drinking activity, and movement-related events are continuously monitored.
  2. Precise spatial measurement of home cage behavior is necessary in order to evaluate different products including large scale pharmaceutical designs and genetic lesion programs.

  3. Installed at all four corners of the home cage, FUTEK's high precision load cells will measure the behavioral patterns of the subject as it undergoes testing.

  4. As the test subject moves throughout the cage, the load cell streams the loads produced to individual USB Modules.

  5. SENSIT™ Test and Measurement Software data logs these results on four different channels.

  6. Researchers can evaluate behavioral metrics such as feeding frequency, meal duration, water consumption, activity levels, and circadian behavior patterns. Continuous automated monitoring reduces manual intervention while generating highly repeatable datasets for long-term behavioral research.

Products in Use

The load cell selection depends on system architecture and sensor mounting or fixturing requirements. Paired with FUTEK USB Solutions and SENSIT™ Test and Measurement Software, these systems enable reliable data acquisition and behavioral analysis.
